Every year the Gospel for the Fourth Sunday of Easter explores the image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. In tandem with the practice of other denominations, the College of Bishops agreed some years back that this particular Sunday would be kept as ‘Vocations Sunday’ in the Scottish Episcopal Church, a chance to remind ourselves of our calling, to re-engage with our identity and to rededicate ourselves to our task.
Vocations Sunday this year falls on Sunday 30 April. As before, SEI students are available to come and preach in charges across the Province on that Sunday; available to come and preach about the discipleship of all Christians, wherever our lives are set, and about the vocations for which they themselves are being formed in the Scottish Episcopal Institute.
Vocations Sunday is an opportunity for each one of us, whatever our life circumstances, to give thanks to the One who calls us; to resolve to grow in knowledge of the One to whom we belong; and to recommit ourselves to following Him more intentionally. To be pastors of others after the likeness of the One who calls us and knows and loves us through and through, Jesus, shepherd of the flock. He who said ‘My sheep hear my voice. I know them and they follow me’.
