At the annual Lectionary Learning Day in the Diocese of Glasgow & Galloway for clergy and lay readers, the Revd Dr Anna-Claar Thomasson-Rosingh, SEI’s Director of Studies, explored the Gospel of Luke. Over thirty clergy and lay readers participated and enjoyed the hospitality of St James the Less Episcopal Church, Bishopbriggs, whilst many others joined online.
Dr Deborah Lewer, Senior Lecturer in History of Art, University of Glasgow, spoke about ‘Unseeing and Re-seeing the Nativity’; Anna-Claar uncovered riches in the stories of the prophetess Anna, Jairus’s daughter and the haemorrhaging woman under the title “Re-seeing the Women in Luke”.
In the afternoon, Debbie and Anna-Claar shared a session about ‘Seeing/Not-Seeing in Luke 24’ to link the text to three works of art: Diego Velasquez’s ‘Kitchen Maid’ (c. 1620, National Gallery of Ireland); Sigmar Polke, ‘Son of Man’ (window at Grossmunster church, Zurich, 2009); and Rembrandt’s ‘Supper at Emmaus’ (1649, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK).
The company was fine, the conversations were deep, and the comments were rich. A good day for all!
