Principal at St John’s Perth

SEI’s Principal, Prof Michael Hull, was honoured to preach at the Good Friday devotions on 18 April 2025 at St John the Baptist Episcopal Church, Perth, and to participate in the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion.

The Very Rev Graham Taylor, Rector of St John’s and Dean of the Diocese of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane, along with the Rev Annie MacKay Hughes, Assistant Priest, welcomed Michael to St John’s. (Prof Hull is pictured above between Dean Taylor and Rev MacKay Hughes.) In addition to his diocesan and pastoral roles, Dean Taylor is SEI’s Chaplain; the Rev Mackay Hughes is an SEI graduate.

St John’s is a key charge in the Diocese of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane. Since 1689 with the disestablishment and disendowment of the Scottish Episcopal Church, this congregation has survived and thrived in Perth. In 1715, St John’s was set up as an ‘English Chapel’, and Episcopalians worshipped on various sites until 1795 when the site in Princes Street was bought; and in 1849, St John’s formally joined the Scottish Episcopal Church. In 1850, the Chapel was demolished to make way for a larger Church that stands today.

Prof Hull was at St John’s as part of SEI’s renewed efforts to engage the wider Scottish Episcopal Church it serves. SEI supports ordinands, students for lay ministries and all those engaged in deepening their Christian faith across the SEC. It does this through programmes of formation and learning, both onsite and online, which aim to nurture the discipleship of all the baptised in their shared response to the call of God in their individual vocations.
