The Rev Canon Prof Michael Hull (second from left), SEI’s Principal, was the preacher at the 2025 Commemoration of the Martyrdom of King Charles I, the Royal Martyr, at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh, on Tuesday 28 January 2025.
The Rt Rev Dr John Armes, Bishop of Edinburgh, presided and was assisted by the Very Rev John Conway, Provost, and the Very Rev Dr Stephen Holmes, Chaplain to the Royal Martyr Church Union in Scotland, Provost of St Ninian’s Episcopal Cathedral, Perth, and an Associate Tutor at SEI.
King Charles I founded the Diocese of Edinburgh in 1633 and championed the 1637 Scottish Prayer Book from which the Communion Office was taken for the day with choral singing. Charles was beheaded on 30 January 1649. The Royal Martyr Church Union, which organised the commemoration thereof, was founded in 1906.
