Issues in Gender & Liturgy Conference

The Scottish Episcopal Institute are pleased to invite members of SEC and our ecumenical partners to a day conference in Edinburgh to celebrate two recent SEI Journal issues on Gender and Liturgy respectfully and delve deeper into their exploration.

The conference will take place on 23 March 2026, 9am – 4:30pm, at St John’s Episcopal Church on Princes Street and online.

Eight speakers will give a short presentation on their essays published in two recent editions of the Scottish Episcopal Institute JournalGender (spring 2025) and The Future of Liturgy (autumn 2025).

The speakers are:

Alison Jasper – En/gendering God and Church? What does it look like? How does it feel? What does it mean?
Merete Thomassen – Gender Inclusive Language in the Church of Norway: A Story of Silence, Resistance and Silence Again. NB This presentation will be online.
Kathryn Wills – The Work of Imagination and the Word: Art as a Para-Liturgy of Protest. 
Naomi Browell – Theology on Male Sexual Violence against Women. 
Bishop Robert Gillies – At Work with Our Prayers. NB This presentation will be online.
David Jasper – Liturgy and the Problem of Metaphors.
Bridget Nichols – Great Expectations: Liturgy in the Age of Resources.
Christopher Taylor – Is This My Body? Performing the Eucharist: From Immanence to Transcendence.

For those attending in person, there will be a small charge of £5.00 to cover the cost of coffee, light lunch and tea.
